Kildare and Wicklow ETB respond to the demand for multi-denominational education among families in Kildare and Wicklow
Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board (KWETB) is highlighting the growing demand for multi-denominational education among families in Kildare and Wicklow, following the publication of the Department of Education and Youth’s recent Primary School Survey.
This national survey of parents and guardians found that approximately 40% of parents whose children attend primary schools under religious patronage would prefer their children to attend a multi-denominational school. The survey received 241,301 responses. The full results are available online.
Acting on the survey results: In June, the Department of Education and Youth notified all primary schools to respond by 31 October 2026, following consultation with their key stakeholders, as to whether they wish to be included in the first group of schools to act on these survey results and explore changing patron.
Alternative Patrons: Education and Training Boards (ETBs) are patrons of Community National Schools (CNSs). Becoming a Community National School is one option that schools and parents can express a preference for as part of this process.
Community National Schools: Community National Schools (CNSs) are State-run and State-funded. They are multi-denominational and co-educational primary schools that follow the national Primary School Curriculum. They provide a multi-denominational learning environment in which children also participate in a multi-belief and values education programme, Goodness Me, Goodness You! With sacramental preparation being facilitated outside the school day.
There are currently 33 Community National Schools in Ireland. For more information, visit www.cns.ie.
Education and Training Boards Patronage of Community National Schools
Schools have a multidenominational patron choice if they wish to become Community National Schools and still retain a local Board of Management, with representation from parents, staff and the wider community. Principals will continue to lead their schools on a day-to-day basis, supported by KWETB’s expertise in governance, finance and human resources. KWETB is currently patron to three Community National Schools.
School funds will remain dedicated to each school and used solely for the benefit of its students and community. This approach combines strong local leadership with the additional support and services provided by KWETB, enabling school leaders to focus on teaching and learning.
